Terms

PCW (Post Consumer Waste) is all the paper you place in the recycle bin that is used to produce more paper

Pre-consumer fiber has not yet been used by the consumer and includes paper/envelope trimmings and de-inked pre-consumer waste

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is an international organization that brings people together to find solutions which promote responsible stewardship of the world's forests. Certified products are tracked through all stages of development, "from the raw material in the forest to the consumer, including all successive stages of processing, transformation, manufacturing and distribution."

ECF (Elemental Chlorine Free) means the pulp has been bleached without “elemental” chlorine gas, but still uses chlorine compounds. While toxic by-products are reduced, they are not eliminated, such as chloroform, a known carcinogen

PCF (Processed Chlorine Free) means that a paper is made with recycled fibers and no chlorine compounds have been used in the recycling process. The original virgin pulp may or may not have been bleached with chlorine. PCF combines the benefits of recycling and oxygen-based bleaching, such as oxygen, ozone, and hydrogen peroxide.

TCF (Totally Chlorine Free) means that the pulp used has been bleached without any chlorine compounds. To guarantee TCF status, papers of this type are typically tree free (hemp, kenaff, sugarcane, etc.) or use virgin tree pulp.

Green-e certified means that the paper has been manufactured with 100% certified renewable energy, including wind energy, solar power, low impact hydropower and biomass. Neenah Paper is a Green-e certified facility.
